Music Monday - Buddy Rich

Things are sort of dull around the Music Monday composing room, so for the next few weeks the cracked editorial staff has decided on a new feature for the day:

The artwork of David Stone Martin on record covers.

One exciting work of art (called Illustration by some) will be presented here each week until they run out. Most scans are from the editor's personal library and the original copyrights apply.

They are presented here for admiration and educational purposes only.

September 30 in 1917 Buddy Rich was born. Next Friday is his birthday. Did you send a card?

From WIKI:
Although Rich was usually helpful and friendly, he had a short temper. While he threatened many times to fire members of his band, he seldom did so, and for the most part he lauded his band members during television and print interviews. Dusty Springfield allegedly slapped Rich after several days of "putting up with Rich's insults and show-biz sabotage."

In the Beastie Boys song "Sabotage", the lyrics "I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle," referred to Rich's temper. Buddy Rich held a black belt in karate, as mentioned in a CNN television interview with Larry King, c. 1985.

Band member and lifelong friend David Lucas says that "Rich had a soft heart underneath it all. His favorite song was "It's Not Easy Being Green".

Though Buddy Rich appeared on a number of Norman Granz and Clef albums, I can only find two that he actually led and have David Stone Martin artwork.

Music Monday - Billie Holliday

This is David Stone Martin's interpretation of the Jazz Singer Billie Holiday.

Her legend need not be repeated here. If you don't know it already, you never will.

Yesterday July 17, in 1959, we lost Billie Holiday.

Music Monday: A new Gerry Gersten find.

Gerry Gersten Art

Did I mention Annie's abilty to spot a gem? She found this in a backroom of a junk shop, plucked from a pile (I mean PILE) of literally thousands of LP records.

While I dug carefully through the heaps, she perused the rest of the shop then walked up, picked this one up and said "Isn't this a Gersten cover?"

Music Monday: The Beales

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's a crappy rip off.

But they could have at least spelled the name right.

The junk store wanted 600 dollars for it so it is still there ...

This is a perked-up version of a photo that I took of it while the store owner wasn't watching.

Music Monday - David Stone Martin again

Machito cover - David Stone Martin

After digging and flipping through several piles of old and certainly dusty vinyl long playing records at the almost-lit rear of a junk shop, all I could come up with was the front part of a 10 inch record jacket. The back panel and the record and the inner sleeve (if there ever was one) were gone.

I carried the fragment of cardboard to the counter nearer the front of the establishment and began what I thought would be a lengthy discussion.

“I can’t find the rest of this jacket or the record but I’d like to have it anyway.”

The proprietor jumped up from his lunch to get a better look at the square card in my hand. Then he sat back down.

“Oh, that,” he said, as if he were wholly familiar with the particular item, “You can have that.” He waved it off as if it were trash, which, in his shop, it was. And he returned to his lunch.

I left.

It is a David Stone Martin cover for a Norman Granz 10 inch album for Mercury. It’s a treasure to me.
