Music Monday - Flip Phillips

Things are sort of dull around the Music Monday composing room, so for the next few weeks the cracked editorial staff has decided on a new feature for the day:

The artwork of David Stone Martin on record covers.

One exciting work of art (called Illustration by some) will be presented here each week until they run out. Most scans are from the editor's personal library and the original copyrights apply.

They are presented here for admiration and educational purposes only.

Lifted from WIKI

"BiographyBorn Joseph Edward Filipelli in Brooklyn, New York,[1] and over a long career, he played on many albums, retired to Florida for fifteen years, came back to music, and recorded a CD for Verve Records when he was in his 80s. Phillips performed in a variety of genres, not just jazz. These include bebop, mainstream jazz, swing, jump blues and East Coast blues.

In the mid 1940s, Phillips was one of the anchors of the Woody Herman band, prior to going out on his own and prior to joining Jazz at the Philharmonic. He also played with the Woodchoppers, a small spin-off group that Herman led. His deep, strong and articulate playing with a very full sound contrasted him to his successors such as Stan Getz in the subsequent Herman bands.[citation needed]

His orchestra, which recorded for Verve in 1949, included Buddy Morrow, Tommy Turk, Kai Winding, Sonny Criss, Ray Brown and Shelly Manne.[3] Phillips was a frequent player at the Odessa Jazz Party in Odessa, Texas.

In 1958 he played some solos for Billie Holiday.

Phillips died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in August 2001, at the age of 86."

August 17, in 2001 we lost Flip Phillips.

Teddy Wilson was a fine piano player.

He was probably best known for his years and recordings with Benny Goodman groups and heading up a small band to back vocals for some of the best Billie Holiday recordings.

Teddy Wilson died yesterday July 31, in 1986.
He was 73.

Near as I can tell, this was the only David Stone Martin cover for a Teddy Wilson record. There were two 45 rpm records, same design slightly different colors.

This is David Stone Martin's interpretation of the Jazz Singer Billie Holiday.

Her legend need not be repeated here. If you don't know it already, you never will.

Yesterday July 17, in 1959, we lost Billie Holiday.

Here is a romantic, even sensous, water color and pen sketch buy our feature artist: David Stone Martin.

This is LP volume #4 of a group of recordings famously know as the "LAST" recordings of Artie Shaw. They are not rare. They have been re-released several times.

But they apparently really are Shaw's last known recordings before he abruptly abandoned the clarinet entirely.

Today in 1910, Artie Shaw was born.
