The Popularity Contest
Flickr watches the total visits to each photograph posted. Then the number of comments is factored in. The number of galleries a photograph has been added to is considered and the number of times a photograph has been added to a “Favorite” list. All of these numbers are gathered and somehow combined with how FAST all this happens and the result is called “Interestingness.” The effect will leave a photograph that gets a 1,000 visits over a year not as "Interesting" as a photograph that got 300 visits in a month. To learn more about this go to Flickr's "EXPLORE" page.
They list the 100 most “Interesting” each day, gathered from all the members.
The top 100 within a member’s stream can also be calculated.
Here in the left column are the top 20 most “interesting” in the anyjazz65 photostream as of today.
Each will be shown with its original title and caption.
Starting with number Twenty ...
Just for comparison, the right-hand column will list the top twenty photographs based on the number of visits in the anyjazz65 photo stream.
You will see that the number of visits is not the same as Flickr's "Interesting" rating.
The numbers for this comparison will be as of August 22, 2011.
Starting with number Twenty ...

Three Robins
Three robins take a break. These are the plump American birds miss-tagged "Robin" when they were mistaken for the lovely English Robin.

The doorbell doesn't work. You'll have to knock.
“If you’re ever out my way, stop by,” he said, knowing it was an empty invitation.
“I’ll sure do that,” she said, not meaning it at all.
But he waited. The days and nights closed in on him until his last breath slipped out between the moon and the howl of a coyote. “Life is too short,” he thought, as transparency overtook him. “Life is too…”
She remembered him between ticks of the tall clock in the hall. And then she forgot.

Faxon, Oklahoma.
We were lost again. Trying to find a new route to Duncan from Frederick, Oklahoma. (There isn't one.) We happened upon a town that I've never heard of, within a half-hour's drive from where I have lived for 30 years. Faxon, Oklahoma. I am sure the residents of that quiet village are quite proud of their home-town but unless we had been lost, we would never have happened upon it. It is not on our map.
The thing that stopped us was this building, visible from the highway. It lends itself to many questions not the least of which is: What happened here?
There are windows blocked in, windows changed for a curious round fixture. It seems to be of poured concrete construction. Sturdy. Renovations were started and unfinished. Painting was started and incomplete.
Three theater seats sit under the canopy on the left. There is a pile of rubble near the center post. There is a "hotel" sign barely visible just above white paint on the right wall. There are mattresses visible through the round window under the canopy.
Questions. Imagination needs questions, among other things.

They rate in the top twenty by traffic count AND Flickr's "INTERESTING" SYSTEM.
The above two are examples.

Bookshelf Auto-biography #2
For the bookshelf biography.
This is installment two of a slowly growing bookshelf series. The original thought behind it was that if you photographed a shelf of your books, it would tell a lot about you. Does it?
This on is rearranged to make sure there were no duplicates with the other photo. They get shifted around often. Still, there is one repeated here.
I rambled on about this more than a year ago in the blog.

Oklahoma City Sculpture
This sculpture sits in mid-town Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
It can now be seen on Google's satellite photo.
Look at the corner of Couch and Robinson in downtown Oklahoma, City. The MS version has it in the shade at the present but it can be seen clearly on the Google shot.

The Record Collection.
Well, some of it.
When the CD revolution was expected to make vinyl obsolete, I bought whole collections at garage sales for nickels and dimes. I bought out an entire record store in Texas once, sold the duplicates and came out ahead.
Recently I bought the Numark usb turntable to replace my ancient Pioneer. Now I can plug it into the confuser and convert an LP to mp3 when I want to. Or I can plug it into the old amp and listen to a few tracks from the stacks on the old JBL’s.

This one was added on one Flickr Gallery.

1955
Salina, Kansas. This is on Santa Fe Avenue looking north. The bank clock is visible at the Iron Street corner. Across the street are those old shops: Gibbs, Epps Bootery, Seitz, Linck Pharmacy. The quartet headed toward us are in the latest fashion for the year.
There were no shopping centers, no Wallyworld. When you shopped you strolled the downtown sidewalks.
This was scanned from an old 35mm negative.
In 1955 I worked in a camera shop (just to the right) and I often tried out new cameras when they came in. I would load a roll of film and step out the front door and capture what ever was on the street at the time.

Baker Hotel and resort, Mineral Wells, Texas.
This is the abandoned Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas. There are many stories of hauntings and ghosts. There is a fascinating history here.
See the whole story here.
Haunted? It is rated at a 14 story building....but you know, one never counts the 13th floor in most hotels. The elevator goes from the 12th floor to the 14th. So....actually are there only 13 floors...hm?

Rick Nelson
Ricky Nelson plays a concert in Lawton, Oklahoma many years ago at the Great Plains Coliseum on Sheridan. Seems like a lifetime ago and I guess it is.
It was a lucky shot from the balcony, stage right. Pentax K1000, Vivitar 90-200 zoom, fast film. Lucky shot.

Taos Fish
A small patio just off the villiage square,Taos, NM
There is artwork everywhere you look.
I found only two things a bit troubling in Taos: The auto traffic and the effect of tourism on the town and people. Many years ago I was told that Taos was more or less a sleepy community of artists, banded together for a common goal: art. It was a cluster of studios.
Now it is a cluster of “galleries” and far and away too much automobile traffic for the population of the small town. It is the junction of at least 4 state highways. It insures that if you are traveling highways 64, 518, 240, or 585, you must pass through Taos, often center town Taos.
Still, there were wisps of the artist atmosphere, here and there. But really, not many. We found clumps of paintings done all in the same style, colors and sizes for a “showing.”
The people were all friendly and helpful and welcoming. That is except for a few sullen teen age mops in their baggy pants or too-much-skin outfits. But I guess you find that everywhere.
It was a lovely visit in spite of soaring prices for food and accommodation. We enjoyed the “galleries” and the small shops. We took one short hop to the north for a visit to the community of Arroyo Seco which actually seemed more like the Taos of yore.

Connie
She sat alone in the corner
Dreaming her fading dreams,
Watching her world whistle and whine,
Away and without her.
Once more she thought, once more in the sky.
Once more where there is no horizon,
To fly, once more, to fly.
Here are some recent pictures on mank999's Flickr stream.

Hotel Settles - Big Spring, Texas
Sign of the times?
This boarded up street is on Interstate 20 business route through downtown Big Spring, Texas. Population about 25K. Sad.
This is 3rd street, one-way east connecting to Interstate 20. Second street is one-way west.
The building is empty. Abandoned, boarded up. How can this be?
I have been taking pictures of many buildings and mid-town areas in lots of cities. None have sparked the nostalgia and memories as this much as this one.

Here's one to ponder. Go and take a picture of your bookshelf or part of it. Leave it just like it is or re-arrange it. Does it tell all about you? Does it tell some about you? Does it say anything at all?

Design From Nature
This photograph was picked up by an online photoshop website called photoshopproroadmap.com,
for a suggested example for a "textures" overlay. It has been selected as a favorite only once. It has gathered only 8 comments. But it has been visited 13,661 times.
Even with that traffic count, it doesn't even rate a place in the top twenty most "Interesting" from Flickr.
