Breaking out in a thought

Four bikes, four guys

view profile del's1 says: That, indeed , is very odd almost ghostly..somehow it feels like three bikes and riders almost an optical illusion..chheers del

Thanks del. Many of these old photographs seem to hold an illusive extra presence. Most are just pictures, a little droplet of time. Very few, maybe none, say nothing at all.

But there are a few like this. They seem to have grown, augmented the original image, revealing more than was originally captured. It is as if the photographer's plate stored a little more than a picture, a visual record, a silver sliver of time. There seems to be a character that cries, an essence of emotion, or a spirit that seeks to speak.

Maybe there is something extra in all photographs but we are trained to ignore it.

We teach our children of Santa or Father Christmas to feed their imagination, to enhance their fantasies. But we set them up for the real lesson to follow: There is no Santa, no Father Christmas. To be an adult and be accepted in our society, one must disdain fantasy. Fantasy is foolish. Don’t be a child.

There are those who believe that our brain is capable today of mental telepathy or perhaps empathy. But we are taught to ignore these signals because it might be fantasy.

What is that blurred motion we see from the corner our eye, the periphery of our vision? When we turn to stare, there is nothing there. Or maybe we are just trained to see nothing there that might be fantasy.

And is it really fantasy? Maybe it is a very real parallel life. A parallel life carefully taught to not see us…

Now let us turn in our hymnals to number 233. Let’s sing with a great exuberance, let the rafters ring…

Run for your lives! The dam at the booby bin has burst! – Walt Kelly

view profile del's1 says: I ve been studying and playing with this image for a long time. I think that sign behind them is resovable...but not from the size of image I can get from flickr..It might tell you something. For a while I thought it me be an early Pepsi Cola advert...but maybe that was just wishful thinking ( They are my biggest client),,,,chhers del

view profile anyjazz65 says: Good observation, del. I noticed that sign too but could not make out anything at the 300 dpi resolution either. So at your prompt, I did a scan at 9600 dpi of that area and posted it without any photoshop adjustment.

Four bike riders sign See if you come to the same conclusion that I did.

This is what is just above rider number two's head...

Something else I noticed is that none of these fellows have a foot on the ground. They seem to be supporting each other. How they did that and hold still long enough for a several second film exposure is a mystery. I wish it was clearer. I would love to see some of their expressions.

(Just for your information...)It says: Celluloid Starch, I think. It was a brand name of detachable collars, much like the guys are wearing. I did a google search but could not find an example of their logo. There are some tokens with their name and advertising on them for sale on ebay but I can find nothing to match this design.)
