Musical Monday
Things ain't what they used to be. (In fact, they never was.) | There are several musical birthdays today. Born on March 3, were Mike Pender of the Searchers, 1942, Willie Chambers of the Chambers Brothers, 1938, Lew De Witt from the Statler Brothers, 1938.... AND country composers/singers Dave Dudley, 1928 and Don Gibson, 1928, rocker Junior Parker, 1927, and classical singer Enzo Stuarti, 1925.
Mae West’s last hurrah “Sextet” opened in New York for only 9 performances. Artie Shaw recorded “Frenesi” for RCA today and Cab Calloway recorded “Minnie the Moocher” which became the first million seller in Jazz.
And most importantly, Stephen Stills and Neil Young formed a group the called Buffalo Springfield and went on to record: “Something’s Happening Here, what it is, ain’t exactly clear…” Another anthem of sorts. And today we lost guitarist Carlos Montoya, 1993, and drummer Chris Hughs (Merrick) of Adam and the Ants. We lost Dave Amato of REO Speedwagon and Jance Garfat from Dr. Hook, 1944. But today was a sad day for comedy too, as we had to say good-bye to both Lou Costello. 1959 and Danny Kaye,1987. And That's it. |
