Once hunted nearly to extinction, the Bison has returned.
Last week at the Wichita Wild Life Refuge.
This one turned and observed us for several minutes.
They make a growling sound so low and gentle it is almost like a purr. But don’t be mistaken, he was warning us to stay away.
He finally decided we were not going to approach any further and returned to foraging in the tall grass prairie.
The only thing that echoes their bovine lineage is their eyes. They look quite sad and resigned. But they are not. They are very protective of their space and their young. We stopped in a small clearing to observe a small herd of them. One male, turned and marched directly toward the car to let us know we shouldn't get out and that he thought we were too close to the calves. He stood and stared at us for a long time. Believe me, you do not want one of these beings charging at you.
Here, on the far right, a very uninformed man has gotten out of his vehicle to get a closer look. Dangerous and fool-hardy.
The Profile (more than you really wanted to know) is here.
