Music Monday - Sgt Pepper Movie

Today in 1978, the movie version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" opened. The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton and Billy Preston made their "acting" debuts in the movie.

You probably have this album.

I do have this album! This movie is generally disliked, so I think I am one of about three people who like it. The other two are my sons. My favorite performance is Earth, Wind and Fire.

The movie was not nearly as bad as the critics would have it. There was a time when it was accepted behavior for a character in a motion picture to burst into song that was mildly related to the simple story the audience is trying to follow. But not so much when this movie came out.

“Grease” was released the same year. For those who still enjoyed the musical style movie, this greatly out ticketed “Sgt Pepper”

But both were competing with such horror films as “Dawn of the Dead”, “Halloween” (the original), “Magic” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (the original).

And there were three bog-standard movies that same year, “Superman”, “Deer Hunter” and “Midnight Express”.

And comedies? Did you know “Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke”, “Foul Play”, “Every Which Way But Loose” and (good grief!) “ANIMAL HOUSE” came out in 1978?

Do you think “Sgt. Pepper” might have been ill timed?
