Another Mystery Painting

musicians

Here is a painting we saw in an "Antique" shop in Colorado City, TX.

It is about 26 X 30 inches. It is a watercolor sketch of two musicians, trumpet and drums.

Below is the signature enlarged.

It looks like Michael something.

Smithson? Swinfel? Swindel? Swinfer?

Music Monday - David Stone Martin cover for Lester Young Collates #2

Lester Young Collates

Now this one I know is David Stone Martin work. It says so right on the cover.

The recording is of Lester Young, tenor sax. "Prez" is a jazz icon of that era. I remember the last time I saw him in 1957. He had to be helped out on the stage. He waited patiently for the Basie Band to play into a number with resonating section parts. When it came to the tenor solo spot, he slid through it with character and taste. When the solo was over, he was helped off the stage. Three years later, he was gone.

Lester Young. Like Bix and Louis and Coleman Hawkins and scant few others, he started something. He made a sound that others wanted. He was unique.

The Benny Goodman cover a couple weeks ago doesn't say, but I'm pretty sure it is from Burt Goldblatt.
