Found Friday - A Little Surprise
No found items for the regular Found Friday page have turned up so today there is a special FOUND item for your examination.
This snap of two people crowded into a photobooth was found among some items in a box from a junk store in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Just two older people having a good time. Well, look again.
The person on the left is wearing a dress with a wide collar and a hat with a feather and other decorations..
The person on the right is wearing a dress and a man’s hat.
This is characteristic clothing for Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. That wouldn’t be so note-worthy except that they actually look like Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.
Now after comparing this to photographs found on the net of those two and reading a bit of history of them, the conclusion is that this could actually BE Gertrude Stein and Alice. B. Toklas.
Although they could easily afford any photographer they wanted (there are portraits of them by some of the best) they were having fun.
They toured a lot in their later years. They could have been anywhere.
Though this photo was found in Wichita Falls, it does not necessarily mean it was taken there. The town is next to an Air Force Base that generates lots of temporary citizens from everywhere on the continent.
And junk dealers themselves tend to shift things around a bit themselves.
What do you think?
There is a very interesting discussion on this at
Learning Curve on the Ecliptic.
