Saturday's Child - The Barn

Child and Barn

on reverse:
(Dewey & Evelyn)
Here is Linne
taken last
summer he
is bigger now.
He looks like
his dad. Do you
know this barn
up on north farm.

Found photographs often speak to us.

The picture and the words on the reverse moved Flickr member fulvue to contribute this poem.

Do you know this barn, up on North Farm?
It doesn't stand there any more.
Quick howling winds took it down one night,
And left the family for poor.

Do you know this barn, up on North Farm?
It's where little Linne used to play.
He helped his pa keep the tractor alive
And wore his dungarees all day.

Linne grew up and had to go and fight,
Served at Corregidor and Guam,
But when he got back Ma had died,
And Pa could not cope with the farm.

So they sold the land to the neighbouring farm
It was ploughed in and sewn with wheat
The old dirt road can still be seen
But no barn's left standing there, neat.

Well they found his picture taken when he was small,
Little Linne, his dungarees and the barn,
But they're all of them gone since that long ago day
On the dirt road outside North Farm?

Do you remember this barn, up on North Farm?
Where little Linne used to play
Helping pa keep the tractor alive
And wearing dungarees all of the day.
