Musical Monday - Brigitte Bardot

No. I don't have any of these. But well, it's her birthday see.

Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot was born today September 28 in 1934. Yes, that’s 75 years old today.

No, she was not known for her singing.

She had an interesting recording career though.

Sunday Funnies - Employees Only

This door is near the rear of a downtown jewelry store in Salina, Kansas.

The thing to ponder is that the shelter sign was probably placed there in the fifties or sixties. Out at the southwest edge of town was about 7,000 acres of land devoted to the Smoky Hill Air Force Base. The base (later renamed Schilling Air Force Base) was operational throughout WW2 and most of the Cold War. It was home to several Air Force heavy bombardment groups of B-17s and later B-29s.

Salina, which is near the geographical center of the United States, was then considered a potential bomb target. Bomb shelters were considered wise accommodations for the town.

After the wartime airfield became the peacetime Salina Municipal Airport and related businesses, this fallout shelter became an employee lounge. But no one removed the old sign from the door.

The symbol to the left on the “employees only” sign seems to indicate one should not even open the door. A challenge if I ever saw one.

Employees only.

Fast Charlie, the Moonbeam Rider

Faxon, Oklahoma.

Well. At last. Here is the part that this famous building in Faxon, Oklahoma played in the movies. David Carradine who died this year, starred in "Fast Charlie, The Moonbeam Rider" a movie that had little going for it but a chance to see a bunch of antique motorcycles in action. Pirate copies are available but expensive. You’ll have to look sharp. It is only on the screen a few seconds.

(Sorry, movie clip no longer available) Aren't you glad you waited?

Happy Birthday - Shel

Shel Silverstein

Today, September 25 in 1930, Sheldon Alan "Shel" Silverstein was born.

Now a little bitty termite, he come knockin',
Knockin' at my front door,
He walked right in, sat right down
Started nibblin' on the kitchen floor
He chewed on the walls and the ceilings and the halls --
Lord knows he tried --
But he kept a-gettin' thinner
And he never got no dinner
And finally he sat up and cried...

He said, "It's plastic, good Lord, it's plastic!
I know it ain't no wood
And it can't do me no good,
Because it's plastic -- and you can't eat plastic,
Everything's gonna be plastic by and by!"

Then one afternoon in the month of June
I went down to the beach.
There were cuties and beauties in little bathin' suities
And all of them within my reach.
Then a 38-24-36 miss just happened to be passin' my way.
I said, "Please don't think I'm nervy, but you look so very curvy
Please tell me how you got that way!"
She said, "It's plastic -- it's only plastic,
It's pretty as can be, but you know that it ain't me,
Because they're plastic, oh yes they're plastic,
Everything's gonna be plastic by and by."

We lost Shel on May 10, 1999. Thanks Shel.

Tomboy no more.

Tomboy no more

Davie is taking her picture.

She and Davie have lived a couple houses apart on the same street all their lives. They climbed the same trees, splashed in the same puddles. They raced, played tag and fought. Usually she won.

Today, Davie is taking her picture.

Today, Dave is looking at her.

Today, David looks different to her.
