Music Monday - Crazy Hamp

Lionel Hampton, Emarcy Records

Hm. Is this art work by David Stone Martin or Burt Goldblatt or someone else?

I sat in a tiny assembly room intended for around 200 high school students to see Lionel Hampton charm his way through several jazz numbers that he was known for. It was in the mid eighties best I can recall. There was no stage, just a small riser between the musicians and the folding chairs for the seated audience. There were some admirers standing at the rear. It was a charity event I think. I thought nothing of the small venue. I was watching Lionel Hampton, the last survivor of the Benny Goodman quartet. I was watching a long standing, live, legend.

I never saw him live, but he was always my favorite when he as on a TV show like Merv. Such a showman, really seemed to love making music. The sound he made as he played was a great part of his charm.

Another great that had that same effect on me was Dizzy Gillespie and his bullfrog throat.

Thanks much. Yes, Lionel did have a "bleat" one could easily hear. You could always tell when he was really wrapped up in the music. Errol Garner had that habit too.

Yes, Gillespie's voice was unforgettable too. It reeked of wisdom and musical authority.
